Sacandaga Campground Review: A River Angler's Paradise

Sacandaga Campground may be one of the most unique campgrounds I've visited anywhere in New York.

The campground sits on a peninsula where two branches of the Sacandaga River flow around the property before eventually merging downstream. Water is everywhere, creating beautiful views and endless opportunities for fishing and exploration.

I spent three days here and never felt the need to leave the campground.

The fishing was one of the highlights. There are multiple access points throughout the campground, allowing anglers to fish either branch of the river or the waters below the confluence. I spent several mornings and evenings exploring different sections of the river, and there was always another promising pool or current seam to investigate.

The campsites were large, private, and surrounded by mature trees. Like many Adirondack DEC campgrounds, the spacing between sites was excellent. Even when the campground had visitors, it never felt crowded.

For dog owners, the campground works very well. Kona enjoyed exploring the trails and riverbanks throughout the property. She also found plenty of opportunities to cool off in the water.

Amenities include bathhouses, water stations, dump stations, picnic areas, and a swimming hole. Everything was clean and well maintained.

One of my favorite memories from Sacandaga was simply sitting outside with a cup of coffee in the morning listening to the river. No matter where you were in the campground, the sound of moving water was never far away.

The nearby town of Speculator was also convenient for supplies. During my stay I discovered that the Speculator Department Store serves as an Amazon pickup location, which was extremely helpful for receiving packages while traveling.

For fishermen, paddlers, and campers who enjoy being near moving water, Sacandaga Campground is one of the best options in the Adirondacks.
