Blue River Conservation Area – Tishomingo, Oklahoma

ree

The Blue River Conservation Area in Tishomingo is a peaceful and scenic escape, spread across 3,000 acres with more than six miles of beautiful river frontage. Campsites sit in shaded, forested loops and are within sight of the Blue River, offering a quiet, natural atmosphere without being directly on the water. Sites are flat, well-marked, and spaced far apart, providing plenty of privacy.

There are four loops with no hookups, but the campground does have pit toilets, and a dumpster is available on the way out. Class A motorhomes won’t fit here, though some long trailers may still be able to into select sites. The road into the area is long with some uneven patches, so it’s best to take it slow.

Fishing is one of the main attractions. Trout season runs from November through March, with rainbow trout stocked every two weeks beginning November 1. I arrived about two weeks early for the start of trout season, but I still got my fly rod out—no luck this time. I only one night to explore and my fishing time was limited but I did get to add another state to my list of places fished. The river also holds black bass, crappie, and catfish, and there are plenty of productive fishing holes just a short walk from the campground. Appropriate licenses are required for both fishing and hunting.

While there isn’t a designated swimming area, several natural pools along the river near the campsites are deep enough for a refreshing dip. Kona loved the trails throughout the area, and she especially enjoyed swimming at the boat launch. The campground is very dog-friendly as long as pets are kept on a leash and cleaned up after.

Despite its remote feel, the conservation area is accessed by well-maintained roads. Additional features include 4-wheel trails, a boat launch, and remote walk-in campsites for those seeking extra solitude. With easy river access, plenty of outdoor activities, and a quiet forested setting, the Blue River Conservation Area is a relaxing place to unwind and explore.
